- A camera network: Network cameras are the digital successors of the commonly used analog closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems, but instead of a specialized network, they use the local IP network, which also has Internet access.
- Monitors or display units: A computing device that enables user input and output to a display. It is responsible for graphically displaying everything recorded by the camera network.
- VMS: It serves as a front-end interface for security system operators. It's the most visible part of a security and surveillance system.
- Video analytics: Video analytics or intelligent video analytics is the technology capable of generating knowledge from video transmissions, streams, or archives to detect or inform people about specific scenarios or situations.

Today it is also possible to view the system's transmission over a private network, as most of today's security cameras are Internet Protocol digital cameras. While still viewable on an official display unit, computers and mobile devices can also access the system's transmission. Analog cameras are older models with a poorer resolution that need coaxial cable connections to the DVR for each camera and separate wired connections for power. Their field of view is often narrower than that of IP/digital cameras. Finally, enlarging an image will cause the recorded film to distort even more. However, unlike IP/Digital cameras, these cameras are less expensive and do not consume any network traffic.
Digital cameras with far greater resolution and clarity than analog cameras are known as Internet Protocol cameras. They employ a power over ethernet switch to link to an NVR and only have one cable to connect to both the NVR and the power supply. The disadvantages of digital IP cameras are that they are more expensive, use more bandwidth on your network to send images, and demand more storage.

There’s a wide variety of cameras designed for specific purposes for various industries, like internal/external dome cameras, PTZ pan/tilt/zoom Cameras, discreet Cameras, bullet cameras, Thermal Image / Infrared Cameras, NPR/LPR Cameras, and High-Definition Cameras, among others.
As we have seen, there are several kinds of specialized cameras, which vary greatly in shape, size, capabilities, features, and uses. While setting up a Video Surveillance System, it is pivotal to know what kind of camera is best for a certain purpose, to ensure that a business, house, or even street is protected in the most efficient way. Specialized cameras should be used in specific environments to make the most of them and it is most probable that one kind of camera will not work as well where another one will prove best.
Here are six types of specialized cameras and what is their best use:
1. PTZ pan/tilt/zoom Cameras.
PTZ cameras can pan sideways, tilt up and down, and zoom in or out, providing a movable image that can cover a larger ground within a certain space. The images provided are usually more focused on long distances. They are commonly used in outdoor environments and in several industries, such as manufacturing, farming, or property management.
3. Infrared/Night Vision Cameras.
Not all cameras can gather video footage when the lights are out. Thanks to their Infrared technology, these cameras can record movements and objects in pitch-dark environments while maintaining high resolution and clarity. They can also gather footage in the middle of fog, smoke, or moving dust. These cameras are ideal for businesses that operate at night (some farms or manufacturing plants) or that need to guard objects in unlit rooms (such as bank vaults, for example).
4. High-Definition Cameras.
When a reliable image is needed, High-Definition cameras are the best option. Depending on the budget, these cameras can capture images in 720p, 1080p, or even 4K, and they are essential to achieve extra clarity in the footage. This is extremely helpful in businesses or places an elevated risk of criminal activity, like banks, malls, or casinos.

5. Discreet Cameras.
These are smaller cameras that usually record in lower resolutions but can be hidden or blended into the environment. 6. NPR/LPR Cameras.
Number Plate Cameras or License Plate Cameras are cameras that focus on capturing and digitalizing images of license plates on certain areas like streets, highways, and public and private parking lots. These cameras can operate in complex weather or light conditions and are able to capture images from high-speed objects. Their use is very specific as their main objective is to monitor the comings and goings of vehicles in a certain area and for purposes such as vehicle access control, security, or even traffic control.

Also, they have a wider range of vision and don't need to be close to a Networking Video Recorder (NVR) to have quality images; it is even possible to amplify these very images without affecting their quality.
